Travel Options

Before the project received funding in 2023, over 4,100 people answered how they would be willing to change their travel habits once construction begins. Here are some of the requests you, “the traveler” made. We have answers to some and are finding answers to others.

This is a team effort.

We want to minimize construction traffic effects with creative solutions that involve everyone that uses the intersection.

YOU ASKED

To analyze the results from the early feedback surveys.

We’re finding answers

The BWX team addressed each issue, seeking solutions that benefit everyone.

Engagement

YOU ASkED

Engage the community now through construction.

We’re finding answers

TxDOT is committed to two-way engagement with the community throughout the duration of the project using:

  • An updated and interactive website.
  • A survey to identify travel behavior and information needs.
  • Community meetings.
  • Regular project updates through a stakeholder communication group.

Traffic Flow

You ASked

Minimize the amount of time traffic flow is affected.

We’re finding answers

You told us to rebuild the intersection as fast as Kyle Field. That is a tall order! TxDOT has been working with their consultants to identify what’s possible. We hope to show you how the intersection will be rebuilt by late 2025.

Traffic Signals

You ASked

Adjust traffic signals and road configurations, around the intersection, to address traffic concerns once construction begins.

We’re finding answers

Construction on projects in the community and on the Texas A&M University campus have been completed or are planned to help address traffic concerns. TxDOT and the City of College Station are working together to ensure the traffic signals are in sync with one another during and after construction.

  • Diverging Diamond Interchange (swervy interchange) at FM 60 and FM 2818 – Construction completed in 2019.
  • Superstreet project on FM 2818 – Construction is expected to be completed in Spring 2025.
  • Holleman/Wellborn intersection – Wellborn Rd. was raised to the same level as the railroad tracks to remove the “hump” across the railroad tracks.
  • Widen Penberthy Blvd. on campus – Texas A&M University is funding a project to add lanes to Penberthy on campus.

Railroad Tracks

You ASked

Reduce vehicle travel across the railroad tracks.

We’re finding answers

We are still looking into options to make this happen.  It will likely be accomplished through a variety of ways, which is going to require all of us to take action — including you “the traveler.”

Bus Routes

You ASked

Change bus routes.

We’re finding answers

Texas A&M Transportation Services is evaluating options to change bus routes that travel through the intersection to provide more reliable service once construction begins.

Travel Options

You ASked

Check travel options — try a new route or mode.

We’re finding answers

We are working to develop the BWX website so it’s a resource for you to access when planning your trips for the day. We want the website to be a clearinghouse for up-to-date information and connect you to community and campus travel resources. Look at your travel options!

Mobility Coordinator

You ASked

Mobility coordinator to help travelers understand options.

We’re finding answers

TxDOT is engaging other “big city” projects around the state to learn how they helped travelers understand their options during large disruptive highway projects. TxDOT is exploring options to provide “boots on the ground” assistance to travelers and businesses once construction begins. Take a look at what the Waco TxDOT District did for travelers during construction on I-35.

Parking

You ASked

Change parking lot designations and choices.

Texas A&M Transportation Services is assessing what it would take to change parking lot designations to help reduce the amount of traffic that crosses the railroad tracks. We will share more information as details become available.

Class Schedules

You ASked

Change schedules and/or locations.

We’re finding answers

Shifting class schedules by 30 minutes is one idea included in  Texas A&M University’s Capacity Study. Final recommendations have not been made, but once a decision is reached, we will work with the university to understand how this will affect students, faculty and staff during construction.
