TxDOT begins study

TxDOT Bryan District began studying improvements to the intersection.

2001 to 2002

Initial design

TxDOT developed an initial design (schematic) of the intersection improvements.

2002 to 2007

Public involvement

TxDOT conducted two public meetings for the project in 2002 and 2005 and a public hearing was held in 2007.

2008

Environmental clearance

Federal Highway Administration approved the environmental clearance for the project, allowing TxDOT to continue with project development.

2009

Construction funding not available

While the project had environmental clearance, construction funding was not available.

2009 to 2016

Project development continues

Right of Way acquisition; continuing railroad coordination

2016

Design, schedule and traffic control reviewed

Project reviewed to improve the intersection design, construction timeline, and work zone mobility.

2017

Public engagement

48 meetings; 1,100 attendees; 4,100 surveys

The team updated the project goals based on feedback from the public engagement.

2018 to 2020

Design and schedule refined

The project team used results from phase 1 public engagement to revisit the design and construction.

Summer 2022

Texas Transportation Commission provides initial construction funding

Texas Transportation Commission commits $60 million to the George Bush Drive/Wellborn Road intersection.

Fall 2022

Voters approve $15 million

The Brazos County voters approve a transportation bond package, which includes $15 million for the project.

2022 to current

Develop final design, schedule and construction phasing

FINAL PLANNING BEGINS

TxDOT is working with agency stakeholders and utilizing to finalize the design, schedule and construction phasing to minimize traveler disruption during construction.

Early 2023

TxDOT adds construction funding

Thanks to the voter-approved bond, additional funding from the Texas Transportation Commission, bringing the total to $103 million in funding available for the project.

Fall 2023 to Summer 2027

Public Engagement

TxDOT continues conducting public engagement efforts with agency stakeholders and the public to identify traveler information preferences and mobility strategies during construction. This information will assist in developing a final design and construction phasing schedule for the project.

Summer 2027

Construction scheduled to start

Project is scheduled to let in April 2027, which means that construction could begin as early as Summer 2027.
