About the Project
The intersection of Wellborn Road (FM 2154) and George Bush Drive (FM 2347) in College Station, Texas, plays a vital role in the connectivity and accessibility between the Bryan-College Station and Texas A&M University communities. The existing intersection, which has not been improved in more than 20 years, is no longer able to efficiently handle the growing number of travelers. Congestion and long queues develop every weekday over several hours during peak travel periods and Texas A&M University class-change times.
To make conditions more challenging, the Union Pacific Railroad track runs next to Wellborn Road and crosses George Bush – blocking traffic during every one of the 20-or-more trains each day. With rapid growth in student housing to the south and southwest of the Texas A&M campus, traffic through this intersection continues to increase. Brazos County is in the top ten percent of the fastest growing counties in the United States… And the County’s population is expected to grow from 240,000 now to 350,000 by 2040. These factors will make congestion worse at the already overloaded intersection.
Project Goals
Improve safety
Enhance safety by reducing the potential for severe collisions and minimizing conflicts between trains, vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.
Improve mobility
Improve mobility by optimizing intersection and system operations, as well as enhancing signal coordination.
Avoid long-term full-road closures during construction
Avoid long-term full-road closures during construction to maintain traffic flow.
Shorten construction timeline
Expedite construction to minimize traffic impacts and complete the project quickly.
Minimize noise, flooding and other problems
Limit disruptions such as noise, flooding, train horns, and other environmental impacts during construction and after project completion.
Minimize costs
Keep overall project costs as low as possible.
Minimize additional right-of-way needs
Design the project so the footprint is as small as possible, limiting the amount of adjacent property needed.
Connect the campus and surrounding community
Strengthen connections for all users between the Texas A&M University campus and the surrounding community.
Landscape, walls and structure aesthetics
Incorporate aesthetically pleasing landscaping, walls and structural designs.
